Product Description:

The Fujinon MK to RED DSMC Conversion Kit is a one of a kind user-replaceable lens mount kit, specifically designed for Sony-E mount-equipped Fujinon MK 18-55mm Cinema Zoom lenses. In the near future, this kit will also offer compatibility with its counterpart, the Fujinon MK 50-135mm.

To make this lens mount conversion possible, the kit takes advantage of the extra space the RED DSMC1, DSMC2 & Ranger cameras use to house their interchangeable lens mounts. This means that this lens connects to the camera via the 4 threaded holes that would normally connect your lens mount. To make lens changes easy, the mount incorporates 4 custom-designed knurled thumbscrews that are held captive within the mount itself.

DIY Conversion:

There a link to the full assembly guide, next to the image gallery.

The mount however is fully user replaceable and only requires the one screwdriver provided to remove the Sony mount and attach the new one. The conversion takes about 15 minutes to complete, and all of the components can be removed with ease.

The process is also completely reversible and can be swapped back to its original Sony E mount if you require.

Are there any downsides?

This lens mount has been designed with every precaution in place, in order for it to perform as you would expect on a mirrorless mounted camera system.

All key lighting scenarios have been rigorously tested, including veiling glare and also heavy lens flares from small pointed light sources, to ensure it will produce excellent and clean results.

It has been mainly tested on DSMC2 which has the benefit of the integrated light baffle, but testing on DSMC1 cameras has also achieved excellent results.

I do want to mention that this lens mount conversion is really pushing the limits of what is possible and there may be some unforeseen instances where the lens may perform differently from how you may expect.

However under all the testing, including real-world commercial shoots, any small issues I have come across I have amended the design of the mount to correct them.

Will the lens still be Parfocal?

Yes the kit is designed so that the lens will remain parfocal and will hold focus as you zoom in and out.

The back focus adjustment on the lens will need to be recalibrated to the camera to achieve this.nIf you can't calibrate your lens correctly, it means that your camera's back focus is incorrect.

All REDs have their back focus calibrated from factory, so 99% of the time the back focus on your camera will be correct. if it isn't, don't worry, it's an easy adjustment to make on DSMC1 & DSMC2 cameras.

Why the Fujinon MK Lenses?

Many companies have products or creations that go above and beyond what is realistically required and I believe the Fujinon MK Lenses are one of those products. The level of quality and thought truly exceeds what is conventionally expected of a cinema lens at this price point.

There is a fantastic article on Fujinon's website, which interviews the people who created the MK lenses and you get a real sense of their passion, insight and vision, allowing for these lenses to be achieved.

www.fujifilm.com/fujinon-mk

Key takeaways from this article include:

  • Consistent 4K optical resolution across the zoom range.
  • Minimal chromatic aberration, even wide open, thanks to multiple ED lens elements.
  • Vivid Fujinon colors matching the esteemed Fujinon HK, ZK, and XK Series.
  • Lightweight design at just 1KG, achieved through composite plastics, without sacrificing thermal properties.
  • A premium feel and balanced lens handling.

In my opinion, the Fujinon MK lenses represent the best-all-round cinema zooms in their price range. While there are lenses that are faster, or offer coverage for FF sensors, many don't come close to the thought and engineering behind the Fujinon MK zooms. Optically this lens performs incredibly closely to its nearest sibling the FUJINON 19-90mm T2.9, which costs about 10x the price at £30,000 / $35,000

I believe Fujinon's intention was that by fitting these lenses with mirrorless mounts, it would be a way of protecting their higher end lenses. This design limits the conversion to EF, PL, or LPL camera mounts, limiting its use on alot of high-end cinema cameras.

Quick Release Thumbscrews:

With the goal of maximum strength and usability in mind, these custom-designed thumbscrews were crafted from SS17-4 PH stainless steel.

After testing different materials stainless steel was found to be the strongest material, with the highest sheer force, that would be machinable in such a small form factor.

Tightening up by hand via the built in knurled thumbscrews allows you to securely mount the lens to the camera. They also feature T20 Torx inputs, so you can use a T20 Torx bit to achieve the tightest possible fit.

Optimised Baffle Design:

To ensure the best optical performance when used with RED DSMC1, DSMC2 & Ranger cameras, the mount features an integrated light baffle similar to one found on the original lens mount.

This baffle effectively reduces unwanted internal reflections & additionally on DSMC2 and Ranger cameras, it works in tandem with the built-in internal light baffle housed within the OLPF. This further enhancing lens flare performance.

For the upcoming Fujinon MK 50-135mm conversion kit, an extended light baffle will be included that can be securely attached to the mount. This provides precise control over light spill and minimises internal reflections when using the 50-135mm lens.

Optimised Lens Mount Coatings:

Given that the rear of the lens mount is partially exposed to light, it becomes a part of the optical setup.

To make it as optically perfect as possible, a matte black coating has been applied to minimise unwanted internal reflections. This unique matte black finish is achieved through a specialised matte black anodising process which is further reinforced with a unique hardening treatment. This ensures a consistent and durable matte black finish.

However, this coating isn't ideal for the front of the mount, as it's subject to handling and heavier wear and tear, which demands a more durable finish. To solve this issue, the front of the mount goes through a separate process where key parts of the optical setup are masked off and all the remaining areas that will be subject to heavy handling then have a textured powder coating applied.

This is a unique setup and manufacturing process but is essential as it drastically improves both the usability and optical performance of the mount.

SSD UPGRADE - KIT

Our custom SSDs provide a brand-new, warrantied upgrade for RED DSMC2®, DSMC1®, and RED ONE® cameras.

Our Mission

Our aim with these products is to ensure legacy RED® camera systems remain operational and reliable for years to come.

With REDMAGs dating back to 2010 and MINI-MAGs to 2013, much of the second-hand media is reaching the end of its life. Our upgrade kits offer an easy solution for restoring them to better-than-new specifications.

Fully assembled CINEMAGs, compatible with MINI-MAG® and REDMAG® 1.8 specifications, will be available for pre-order from February 2025.

Built from the ground up, they feature improved handling, superior build quality, and CNC-machined aluminium enclosures for enhanced thermal dissipation.

*If you order an SSD upgrade kit now, you’ll have the option to convert your SSD order into a fully assembled CINEMAG before your SSD is shipped and still keep your discount.

Development

Development of our SSDs began in early 2024, with the first major challenge being to overcome the camera's proprietary media restrictions. The initial reverse engineering process, led by Christopher Tusk, took around 10 hours to bypass these restrictions and enable a DSMC2® camera to recognize the drive with partial recording functionality.

This was a significant breakthrough, but it quickly became clear there was much more work to do. While the camera could identify the SSD, achieving proper recording functionality presented significant challenges. Resolving these issues required 10 months of extensive reverse engineering and refinement.

These final SSDs are the product of multiple variations and specifications we had manufactured, honed down iteration by iteration to create a replacement SSD that far exceeds the performance and reliability of any RED MINI-MAG.

Everything RED®
can do, and more.

Our initial plan was to match RED® specifications. But after months of research, we realised just how much we could improve these drives.

Over the 15 years that RED produced their REDMAG® and MINI-MAG® media, they made substantial improvements to the thermal properties of their SSDs.

The final 480GB and 960GB MINI-MAGS® RED created were custom-built SSDs, manufactured at a significantly higher cost than previous generations, and were specifically built and designed around a new generation of Toshiba Memory, engineered for very cool operation.

During the development of our CINEMAG® SSDs, we tested multiple high-quality memory options from brands other than Toshiba. A big problem we encountered with all of them was that these alternatives all generated excessive heat, often leading to thermal throttling.

We believe RED's focus on reducing operating temperatures and utilising Toshiba Memory was not only intended to prevent SSD failure, but may have also been to help protect the camera's internal components from damage.

Our FAQs

This section is for FAQs specifically to do with this pre-order.

For our full FAQs, please click on the help dropdown in the menu

What is special about your SSDs and why can’t you use standard SSDs?

There are several reasons why standard SSDs cannot be used. To simplify, it comes down to both software and hardware incompatibilities. It's impossible to find an off-the-shelf product that works reliably for this setup process, as the hardware is fundamentally incorrect for the task.

Even if you manage to bypass the initial setup issues, the recordings will not be trustworthy as there are over 15-20 specific parameters that must align perfectly between the software and hardware for proper functionality.

How does KipperTie use a consumer-grade M.2 Samsung drive?

KipperTie uses a SATA-based M.2 Samsung drive that can communicate using technology compatible with RED cameras. While these drives are cost-effective to purchase, getting them to work reliably with RED systems is extremely challenging without direct cooperation from Samsung, as there are over 15-20 specific parameters that have to be setup correctly
Consumer-grade drives, while cost-effective, are unsuitable for several reasons:

Heat Generation
: These drives produce excessive heat, risking thermal throttling, camera cooling strain, and potential long-term damage to sensitive components during extended recording sessions.

NAND Quality
: Consumer drives typically use TLC NAND, designed for casual use, lacking the endurance needed for continuous RAW data recording and frequent read/write cycles.

Lifespan: For example, KipperTie's Samsung-based 2TB MINI-MAG® uses TLC NAND rated for 1,200 TBW (600 full drive cycles), while our 960GB SSD with Toshiba MLC NAND is rated for 3,000 TBW (3,000 full drive cycles), offering 5 x the reliability and longevity.

What are the delivery timeframes?

For the Initial "SSD Upgrade Kit" orders, we are aiming to have them delivered by March 1st 2025.

The only delay is due to the manufacturing time required for a large quantity of SSDs, as well as the thorough QC and verification process for each drive.

How do I know if CINEMAG is compatible with my RED camera model?

Any RED®️ DSMC1®️, DSMC2®️ and RED ONE®️ camera is compatible with our CINEMAG SSDs. You can select a SSD kit that will work with your camera.

Are there any firmware updates required to use CINEMAG?

Yes, for DSMC1®️ and DSMC2®️, you must be running firmware version 6.3.75 or later. For RED ONE®️, you must have the latest firmware installed, version 32.0.3.

Can CINEMAG be used interchangeably with RED MINI-MAGs on the same project?

Yes, they act and handle like the original media.
