Why use NEXA-MAG?

FULL POWER.

Older 960GB mini-mags used double the Toshiba components but only accessed half a channel of bandwidth. With NEXA-MAG, we’ve upgraded to a newer generation of Toshiba chips, cutting component count in half while unlocking the full bandwidth channel. The result is 25% faster read speeds, increased reliability with fewer connections, and a lifespan of up to 3000 Terabytes Written (TBW).

Recognising how filmmakers actually handle their media, we have redesigned the enclosure with precision recesses, making it easier and more secure to insert and remove NEXA-MAG drives - eliminating the awkward grip issues of the original MiniMags.

OFFLOAD FAST.

NEXA-MAG achieves offload speeds of up to 570MB/s, a 25% increase over original Mini-Mags. While constrained by SATA III limitations, this is the maximum performance possible for this format - reducing transfer times and maximising shooting efficiency.

NEXA-MAG is designed for enhanced usability, featuring precision recesses in the enclosure for a more secure grip, making insertion and removal effortless. Additionally, the drive’s width has been increased slightly, ensuring a tighter, more stable fit.

Product Description

Designed as an upgrade over the plastic DSMC Lens Mount Cover and Front Body Cap offered by RED,.

These caps are CNC-machined from lightweight aluminium with a rugged powder-coated finish to match the fit and feel of RED DSMC1, DSMC2, and Ranger cameras.

Thumb Screw upgrade Kit

This kit includes 8 quick-release thumb screws, tailor-made for maximum strength and usability.

Crafted from SS17-4 PH stainless steel, these screws were selected for their exceptional strength and machinability in a small form factor.

Compared to the standard mount screws provided with RED DSMC1 and DSMC2 lens mounts, these thumb screws are significantly stronger.

They are designed with knurled grips for easy, secure lens swaps, allowing you to tighten them comfortably by hand. For added versatility, the thumb screws also feature T20 Torx inputs identical to the standard RED mount screws, enabling the use of a T20 Torx bit for the tightest possible fit.

Captive functionality

The thumb screws are optimised for use with captive RED DSMC lens mounts.

Captive mounts feature screws that are held securely within the mount itself. Most RED mounts are the captive type, though some early versions were not.

Optimised Design

These lens mount covers include a raised section designed to match the profile of the foam light gasket found in DSMC2 cameras.

What is special about your SSDs and why can’t you use standard SSDs?

There are several reasons why standard SSDs cannot be used. To simplify, it comes down to both software and hardware incompatibilities. It's impossible to find an off-the-shelf product that works reliably for this setup process, as the hardware is fundamentally incorrect for the task.

Even if you manage to bypass the initial setup issues, the recordings will not be trustworthy as there are over 15-20 specific parameters that must align perfectly between the software and hardware for proper functionality.

How does KipperTie use a consumer-grade M.2 Samsung drive?

KipperTie uses a SATA-based M.2 Samsung drive that can communicate using technology compatible with RED cameras. While these drives are cost-effective to purchase, getting them to work reliably with RED systems is extremely challenging without direct cooperation from Samsung, as there are over 15-20 specific parameters that have to be setup correctly
Consumer-grade drives, while cost-effective, are less suitable for a few key reasons:

Heat Generation: These drives produce excessive heat, risking thermal throttling, camera cooling strain, and potential long-term damage to sensitive components during extended recording sessions.

NAND Quality: Consumer drives typically use TLC NAND, designed for casual use, lacking the endurance needed for continuous RAW data recording and frequent read/write cycles.

Lifespan: For example, KipperTie's Samsung-based 2TB MINI-MAG® uses TLC NAND rated for 1,200 TBW (600 full drive cycles), while our 960GB SSD with Toshiba MLC NAND is rated for 3,000 TBW (3,000 full drive cycles), offering 5 x the reliability and longevity.

What are the delivery timeframes?

Drives will be shipped in Mid-May.

Do NEXA-MAGs work in a standard RED mag reader?

Yes, they are fully compatible with standard RED mag readers.

How do I know if NEXA-MAG is compatible with my RED camera model?

Any RED®️ DSMC1®️, DSMC2®️ and RED ONE®️ camera is compatible with our NEXA-MAG SSDs.

Are there any firmware updates required to use NEXA-MAG?

Yes, for DSMC1®️ and DSMC2®️, you must be running firmware version 6.3.75 or later. For RED ONE®️, you must have the latest firmware installed, version 32.0.3.

Can NEXA-MAG be used interchangeably with RED MINI-MAGs on the same project?

Yes, they act and handle exactly like the original media.
