Why Our Custom SSD Performs Like No Other

So seeing what RED did with their post-2017 SSDs and our own testing on consumer SSD’s, we made the call to also source custom SSDs, built to our exact specifications. 

The most important part from our testing was the NAND choice. We selected Toshiba MLC NAND for the NEXA-MAG because it delivers the best performance profile for use with these cameras; offering fast sustained write speeds, high endurance, and ultra-efficient thermal behavior. 

The other important factor was that we wanted to only use MLC or better - as these are NAND (Memory Chips) designs for “Mission Critical” applications.

MLC NAND is much more unique and costly as It only stores 2 bits per cell, striking the ideal balance between storage density and long-term reliability.

Compared to other types of flash, MLC offers significantly more program/erase cycles, lower error rates thanks to simpler voltage states, and generates far less heat even under extended workloads - making it far more suited to professional use.

This, in theory, means you can record on these drives continuously (days, weeks, months at a time), if there were no capacity cap.

They have been put through hours of continuous real-world use before getting to this point. We simulate the exact conditions these drives will face in the field, ensuring rock-solid performance under pressure.

In contrast, TLC and QLC NAND found in consumer-grade SSD’s, store 3 > 4 bits per cell, and are cheaper per gigabyte, but introduce major trade-offs. 

Their sustained write speeds drop sharply once the SLC cache fills, which happens quickly with large video files. They’re also more prone to errors due to their increased voltage complexity, have much lower endurance, and tend to generate more heat under load. Most importantly, many TLC/QLC drives can have inconsistent performance, making them unsuitable for the demands of high-resolution, high-bitrate cinema workflows.

To our knowledge, no other mSATA SSD has ever existed with the exact specs we’re using. Our drives push the boundaries of what’s possible in this form factor — in terms of speed, thermal efficiency, and sustained reliability.

High-End Components, High-End Standards

But the custom SSDs are just one part of the story. Our PCBs that adapt mSATA to RED’s MINI-MAG connector are also custom-designed and built to extremely high standards, because they’re absolutely critical to the long-term reliability of the drive.

We worked with a specialist manufacturer in Germany to achieve the level of precision we needed. These boards use:

 • High-Tg IS400 material for thermal stability
• ENIG finish (electroless nickel/immersion gold) for durability
• Tight tolerances for track width and annular rings (DIN ISO 2768 - Fine)
• OEM components that are now discontinued and hard to source
• Strict testing for signal integrity, thermal performance, and overall reliability

This isn’t the cheapest or easiest way to make this component, but it’s the right way to make one that works for filmmakers who need to trust their gear.

R&D and Reverse Engineering

A video on our Instagram shows the early process: where we removed every component, mapping the OEM component values, and even CNC machined individual layers off the original RED PCB to fully understand the structure and layout.

That research, along with our partnership with engineers developing the firmware, is what made NEXA-MAG possible. It’s also a huge part of what our pricing reflects — months of unpaid work, trial and error, and custom tooling to get here.

NEXA-MAG isn’t just a storage device — it’s the result of deep R&D, obsessive attention to detail, and a refusal to cut corners. From the NAND we chose to the custom PCBs and endless hours of testing, every decision was made with one goal in mind: creating a drive that filmmakers can rely on in the real world.
